Keeping your business safe.

Keeping Your Business Safe

Over the past couple of weeks we have talked to you about what severe impacts unsafe or unsecured Wi-Fi can have on your business. It can be a time consuming and painful process should something go wrong and could have financial and reputation damage to your business.

Let’s look at a recent local incident.

A local company had engaged in an audit process from a 3rd party provider to their current Managed Service Provider. The audit revealed several issues that could potentially impact their reputation and the company financially should they not take the necessary steps to improve their security.

As they were in contract for their Managed Service the 3rd party advised them to approach their provider to have the issues attended to immediately to avoid any data security breaches. As advised they engaged in fixing all the background issues with the current provider. All works to the best of their knowledge was completed and they went back to business as usual without an issue.

Or so they thought.

The works had not been efficiently completed and resulted in a crashed server. The company had to close their doors for 2 business days and then alert every client in the database that their private information may have been compromised.

The company is also working closely with law enforcement to ensure the incident is properly addressed. They recognise it as notifiable data breach and have reported the incident to Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and external auditor.

This is an ongoing issue and could have been avoided if their technology had been properly cared for.
